How long are you cranking? When cranking a few 100 amps are being drawn so if cranking for some time will make the cable hot.

Not sure I followed what you are taking ohm reading between. Red battery cable to what terminal on the starter? ...

Hi Mike, Sorry if i wasn't very clear. I agree with you that so much amps heats up the wire. However it becomes VERY hot after cranking 3 times for about 10 seconds. What i was trying to say is if you hookup a ohm meter with one wire on the red wire of the stater and the other ohm wire to t engine ground, there is no continuity at all which makes sense. However if you connect the ohm meter wire to the orange wire on the alternator and the other ohm meter wire to the engine ground, it shows some continuity. Is that a sign that i have a short somewhere and/or a bad alternator? Sorry if that does not make any sense. Thank you.

When measuring the orange wire to ground is it still connected to the alternator? I am assuming it is and you are measuring continuity through the field winding in the alternator which would be normal.

As for the battery cable getting hot have you checked to verify the terminals are free of corrosion on both ends and connections are tight?

What is the reading you are seeing? If its reading back through the field, I would think you'd see something in the ohms to kiloohms range, vs. Milliohms.

Sorry for the delay. On top of my boat problems i had a double root canal not sure which one hurts the most: tooth or my wallet) LOL. New manifold, new battery, new alternator, new battery but still cranks too slow. I asked a local mechanic to look at it. He did a pressure test. Couple cylinders are leaking. He believes that the only way to fix it is a overhaul from the top heads, valves, rockers etc. $2,200. I have a potential buyer who wants to buy the boat as is. VERY tempting!

Not surprised about poor compression with having had bad exhaust. Water gets into cylinders and burning water raises exhaust temps that can damage the valves and seats.

However lower compression would allow the engine to turn easier so I cannot explain the slow cranking.

Did it run though? Or is it cranking too slow to start?



After putting it back together and cranking, have you rechecked the oil to make sure no new water has entered? If new water enters, it may not look murky at first, but the oil level will rise.
