Default Mercruiser 5.7 Li alpha outdrive locked in up position

Alpha drive stuck on up position. Trim motor works (makes the usual sound). Trim needed fluid, it was empty but still cannot lower outdrive. Is it possible there is an air lock. If not what elese might it be. Boat is a 97' Maxum. Thanks.

I would try to take the aft most bolt out which holds the trim rams to the drive. This is the aft most part which is responsible for the raising and lowering. You'll probably need two people because it will be tough in the up position and the heavy drive will want to come down with a bang. Best to prop it up with some wood cribbing first.

Then actuate the drive trim and see if the rams go in and out. The pump might be geting power and running and simply not pumping hydraulic fluid. If it was empty look close to see if there are leaks.

How long has the drive been in the up position? If it's been up for a month or more then you may need to help it a little to get it started. Sitting on swim platform and pushing with your feet is one way. Put a little light weight oil on the struts to keep the seals working smoothly.
