Mecruiser 3.0 spark issue

Whats going on guys just bout my first boat its a 2002 maxum 1800 sr with a 3.0.
Went out for a test drive in the bay and when i went to put it in reverse it stalled on me and then it didnt want to start back up after about 30 min of trying to start it i came to find out it was a spark issue so as my buddy cranked it and i tapped on the distributor cap with a screw driver if finally started and drove perfectly normal once i got back to the house and shut it off i tested it again to see if it would start a couple time and started with no issue, Does anyone have any idea what it could be??? Maybe cap, rotor, or ignition module????

Welcome aboard!

Sounds like it’s time for new cap and rotor. Not uncommon to have a crack or moisture issues with them.

Thank you! Im just going to replace the cap,rotor, and also the module buddy of mine said his boat would ther same times when she gets hot!

A bad ignition coil will also produce the symptoms you described except tapping it won’t do anything.
