Default Maxum 1700XR Outboard Question

Hello all

First of all, I am so glad to find this forum and am hoping for some help. I am a new boat owner and have a very nice 1991 Maxum 1700xr. It came with a 70HP Force that pooped out after a few times and now am looking for a used reliable motor to put on it.

Local boat shop has a one owner 50HP Mercury Oil Injected that is in great shape and I can get a good buy on it.

Is a 50HP enough for pulling tubers on this boat? I am for sure getting a stainless steel prop as I read it increases speed as well.

Thoughts?

Is the 70 HP a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? How about the 50HP? Tubes have a tremendous amount of drag.

How well did the Force do at pulling skiers? Yes I know it was a tired motor but if you weren’t happy with it I doubt a newer 50 HP will be any better.

We never pulled skiers only tubes with the 70 and thats all we are hoping to do with this 50.

So were you happy with the performance pulling tubes with the 70?

I have no personal experience with this setup, but have seen 60hp pontoons pull tubes. They were getting 20mph and seemed to work fine.
