Default Lost Reverse?

So reverse just stopped engaging on one of my Bravo IIs. Shift cable is moving down at the engine, but the drive isn't engaging. Forward still works though. There's been no grinding or other odd sounds. Could the cable to the drive have broken such that it'll push into forward, return to neutral, but not pull into reverse? There's no resistance going from neutral to reverse like there is going neutral to forward.

I know of no way for this to be a cable issue. With the boat out of the water the drives cover for the shift mechanism can be removed so you can inspect it and verify it is shifting into reverse.

I googled this and some posts state it was a bad cable.

Try disconnecting the lower cable and see if you can shift the drive and or if the core wire pulls out.

Lost forward closer to home and came back on one engine.
Found the problem- I routed the shift cable too close to the engine coupler and it rubber through...

Well at least you got home and determine the issue quickly.

Just $50 to pull it for the day! All better now.

Oh and lesson learned- use OEM cable boots. I used an aftermarket one and the crimp was plain steel and the screws for the clamp was steel, so they were rusting. Replaced it with mercruiser.

Yep good lesson learned. Glad you were able to turn her around quickly.
