Default Leaking water pump

Hello all. I am new here and new to cruising. I'd really appreciate some help.
I have been told that a leaking water pump on my Maxum 19 is the cause of a faulty starter motor. Is this feasible?
The starter motor was replaced a couple of months ago with a brand new one under warranty. I am now being asked to pay for another new one as the warranty has expired on my boat.

First welcome aboard.

A little more info may be helpful such as what engine do you have?

I am assuming you are referring to the circulating water pump on the engine. Assuming you have either a 3.0 or 4.3 both of which the water pump is on the front and the starter is on the rear right side. Its hard for me to see how a leaking pump on either of these two engines would drip onto the starter.

I would think if it actually failed due to a water leak the warranty would be void anyhow.

Hi Mike and thank you.
It's the 4.3. As you rightly say the water pump is at the front and the starter motor at the back. Their highly qualified and experienced engineer who came out to fix the problem said it was probably a faulty starter motor. It was only later that the claim was made that one problem caused the other...
They know I am new to this and have absolutely no experience of engines. That's why I'm here.

Does the starter have signs of water damage at all?

Glad you are here plenty of folks willing to answer whatever you need to know.

Hi Mike,

Sadly I didn't get to see it...

I have found a local marine engineer so I am going to ask for a second opinion. Will let you know how I get on.

Cheers.

Hey Mike,

Yes the water pump was replaced and now a new starter motor has been fitted on top of the new battery. Hey hum no one said it was going to be cheap running a boat...

Best regards and will let you know the outcome when I negotiate over the price.

Dean
