Default Inboard /Outboard merc 3.0 tune up parts??

I have a 1989 1700, with a merc 3.0 inboard and a alpha one outdrive, it was installed and then ran a few times (by previous owner) then sat for 3 years outside never started or maintained. i drained the gas, i cannot find the cap, rotor, wireset for it online, and dont know what else has to be done to prep this motor before trying to run it again.

thank you,

welcome to the zoo....the one thing you need to do is replace all oils and the raw water impeller....that's gotta be one of the first things you do before you do anything else...
if the engine was stored properly...ie engine fogging...then the cylinders are ok...but if all he did was just shut it off...then take all the plugs out and clean them..regap...and shoot some oil into each cylinder...try and bump the starter over to get the engine to spin freely....no plugs in the head....keep shooting oil down into the cylinder to keep the rings and cylinder lubricated...I'd use WD40....after you've spun it some to get the oil pressure up...then replace the spark plugs.....now with fresh gas..you can start the engine with little fear of it doing any damage....

don't know if this engine has points ..but if it does...check them for corrosion as well as the distributor cap....if there is any corrosion..replace...the plug wires would be the second thing I'd replace.......they are probably pretty dried up and resistant....

then check all of the pencile zinc's in any heat exchangers or oil coolers......they are probably gone by now....
the other thing to change out is the drive oil.....the alpha 1 drive is really easy to change the impeller out....6 bolts and the drive will come off the bottom...then the impeller is on the lower half....be sure to put the drive into fwd before you remove any bolts that hold the drive to the upper unit.....

that's the first thing I'd do before attempting to start the engine...and drive...

one of the best is
www.fisheriessupply.com
they have just about everything and will send you this huge catalog for free...

the other is
www.greatlakesskipper.com

I think that's the name ...anyway...they have alot of stuff also at decent prices....

you can also call any maxum dealer with your HIN and they may be able to cross check back that far for parts....if no dealer near you...you can call my parts guy and he will drop ship parts directly too you
