Junior, I don’t see how any of what you did would cause this. First thing to check is what’s the pressure? Next you can remove the belt to verify it’s not a bad bearing in the alternator, water pump, … next pull one stark wire at a time to see if it changes which would tell you it’s a rod bearing.

A video of all this may be helpful.

Hope I don't sound too dumb but I thought you might want to see a video so I took some of the engine running but I don't know how to add it to the reply. How do I do that? Thanks for being patient with me.

No problem. To upload pictures you use the paperclip icon, most post a link to a utube video if they have an account.

I listened to the video and it sounds like the noise stops and starts, is that correct? If so I would not suspect internal engine issues. Can you pinpoint the noise front to back or one side versus the other. I’m wondering if the starter gear didn’t fully retract and it’s hitting the flywheel.

Yes, it sometimes goes away completely and then comes back. Now that you mentioned the starter, before when it wasn't running and before the spark plugs. I did hear a somewhat loud clink when I was trying to start it before. I am home now and the boat is at my farm not too far away. I will try and see where that sound came from later tonight if I can make it. If not tomorrow for sure.

The sound has grown quieter now and it would go away completely for long periods of time. I had to turn off the engine and restart a few times before it came back, the sound is coming from the right rear corner of the engine.

Right rear? Is that from looking at the front (belt) side of the engine or rear back of the boat looking forward? You could state Port or Starboard which would be very clear.

Well that doesn’t make much sense as the starter is on the other side. Starboard. Could it be a flapper that’s chattering. This is an exhaust device to prevent water back flow. It’s the the upper y-pipe where the rubber exhaust hose attaches.

Hi mike,

I will check again to see where the sound is coming from to be sure. Just really strange it goes away and gives me hope that it might go away for good, then returns and breaks my heart, lol. Well one good thing is you don't think its internal because I started looking at crate engines. Not looking forward to that bill.

Junior exhaust shutters do exactly that, noise can come and go. Under Documents you can fine the Mercruiser manual and see what I’m talking about.

Another way to tell if it’s the flappers is to increase rpm and if the noise stops then you know.

Ok, I will check the manual and the rpm test shortly.
