Default Hole in the block

I noticed a small hole in the side of the block of my 4.3 mercruiser. Its on the left side if looking from the front, down close to the bottom near the joint with the sump. On my old engine it is blocked up and I will block this one also but I'm just wondering what it is used for as I have the engine running and there doesn't seem to be any problems with it running, oil pressure seems good there are no water leaks etc.
Just wondering that's all.

Could be a mounting hole for a bracket, or just a spot in the casting that might get machined depending on the application.

If there isn't anything coming out of the hole then you've nothing to gain by putting something in it.

Corba I am inclined to agree with SS, probably just a mounting boss for something not needed in your setup. A picture may help identify but if running OK and not leaking anything you should be good to go.

This is the casting boss for a manual fuel pump. There is a detent at the deepest portion of the boss that is drilled out for the cam actuator if the engine is being fitted with a manual pump. 4.3 and 5.7 blocks are identical in this respect. No need to block it off if the block isn't drilled through. If it was you would have oil coming out of it. A quick check with a mirror and flashlight would confirm.
