HIN and boat specs
How can I find out what engine was OEM to my 1998 2300SC. I know it has been replaced. Can I find this out through the HIN?

No the HIN does not contain this information. Not sure there is a straight forward answer as most boats come with a standard engine package but there are other engine package options. Does it really matter? To me I would be focused on what is in the boat and it's condition.

This boat seems way under powered and thought that if when they swapped the engine they went from a 350 to a 305 and did not change the gearing in the drive or the impeller. I'm pulling the boat out of the water this weekend to get the specks off the impeller and go from there.

If the boat has been sitting in the water for some time it may have marine growth causing poor performance. You can look at the serial number on the engine block and it will tell you if it's a 305 or 350. If someone replace the outdrive with a different gear ration that would be a problem as well. Post some pictures of the engine when you can.

What drive do you have? I would assume a Bravo III. If so the impeller is on the engine and not in the drive.
I had a 1997 2300SC that had the 7.4L BIII combo and it was a rocket ship.

See post #3 he states he is pulling the boat to get the specs off the impeller, he means propeller. He also said it’s either a 305 or 350 so I would assume Alpha drive.
He’ll have to let us know for sure.

The flame arrestor says 5.0 which would make it a 305. That's an alpha drive.
Have you tested your max rpm at WOT? That will tell you if you need to change props. You should have WOT rpm of 4400 to 4800.

If the engine was swapped they did a very good job as it looks original and I suspect it is. As jr said 305 with an Alpha.

That's what I thought. I will get prop specs this weekend. Does anyone know what the specs should be?

Not at all. Does the prop have any damage. Yes look to get specs of the prop. One last thing is the tach could be off, you can get a photo tach at an auto store to take readings off the balancer on the engine.

On my boat, I had the serial numbers for the drive and the boat, but the number for the engine had rubbed off (I know it's also stamped on the block, but way at the back somewhere...). The local mercury dealer was able to search their database for the drive and boat serial numbers and give me the engine serial number.
I haven't checked the stamp to see if they got it right, but they said they could pull it based on the other two numbers. You could try that if you want to be sure.
