Default High oil pressure anomaly

Man, i am really having my share motor issues these past couple weeks. I had a very slow oil leak on the starboard motor ever since i added the remote oil filter kits on the engines. The port one has been fine, but chronic leaking on the starboard one caused me to remove it today, during a routine oil change on both motors, back to installing that starboard filter directly to the motor. Problem one, the oil leak, solved. New problem, now when the motors are running at idle, both motors show 40-45 psi. However, when i throttle up to 3000-3500 rpms, the starboard motor show a vastly different oil pressur than the port at 65-70 psi. All i did was an oil change and remove the remote filter kit from starboard motor. Could i have done something to cause such a change in oil pressure?

Did you swap the supply and return lines on the kit? Running the wrong way through the oil filter could cause an increase in pressure as flow goes up.

No. As i said, the kit on the starboard motor has been removed completely. Now its just the oil filter screwed directly into the motor.

nope...oil pressure for the engines can run up to about 80psi but there is a popoff valve that will release automatically and by pass the oil filter if it gets too high.....believe me....that is not high oil pressure..after the engine heats up...the oil press..will drop down to 55-65psi.....not a big deal...

relax..enjoy the ride..but keep an eye on the oil pressure and engine temp anyway..

I spoke with a tech today and he echoed your thoughts exactly SP. He said the reason that the port motor is still showing 45-50 psi is because its the one that still has a remote filter kit on it, and apparently it drops the pressure when it has to push oil through the tubes of that kit. Makes sense. But nice to have a reinforcing opinion.

thanks...

What type oil viscosity you using? That could also play with psi.

Check your oil pressure switch.

not to burst any bubbles....but you should really be using a marine grade oil and filter....yeah yeah..I know..mobile one is synthetic ..yada yada yada..... BUT
.....it's not designed to be in an engine that runs up hill ..pulling a log....all the time....that's the kind of load that engine experiences....plus, there are different contaminates than an auto engine experiences.....so....you MIGHT concider switching to a good marine grade synthetic.......

Are both oil filters identical?

Lol SP...you didnt burst my bubble. Im a big fan of mobil one. Never had an issue with it, and my motors purr because of it. Im not sure that there is any definitive proof that mobil one is an inferior grade of oil for marine use, but if it is...we should tell west marine to stop selling it.

Your comment did cause me to do a little research though and one change i will probably make on the next oil change is to switch to 15w-50 viscosity.
