Did you check the voltage on the battery while trying to start the engine? A battery without a load can falsely show good. Have you check voltage at the slave and starter solenoid? Can you turn the engine with a wrench on the crank bolt?

New to boating and not great with engines. Battery shows 12 volt on dash. Not sure where to find starter solenoid. Where is crank bolt?

You need to use a voltmeter and measure directly at the battery then on the starter solenoid which is located on the rear starboard side of the engine down low. Crank bolt is on the front of the engine inside the bottom pulley.

Since you don’t see to know much about engines I suggest you seek help.

I suggest the OP get the mercruiser manual for his engine and get familiar with it. The manual is under Documents of this site.
