Hard to Start
Hi All,
I am new to the Forum and I hope I am in the right place to ask the following question? I have a Maxum 2700 SE with a 350 mercruiser petrol motor. It has a key ignition start (not the button on the throttle). It usually starts fine on the first start, however, after running it for a while and shutting it down I have to give it a bit of throttle to get it to start again. Is this normal or should it start with no throttle? I have just replaced the fuel pump with no success.
Regards
Josh J

Welcome aboard
Should have posted under engines as Forum support is for WEB site issues.
Is the engine carb or MPI? This is a common issue with carb engines that is sometimes caused by the carb dripping fuel into the engine when off flooding it. Opening the throttle allows air in to clear the flood.

You can call me Mike.
Being fuel injected I am guessing it will restart but dies out again unless throttle is given, is this correct? If so then it most likely the IAC needing to be replaced.
IAC= idle air control valve when the engine is cold the mixture is enriched which is why is runs when cold however once warm with a faulty IAC it will not idle.

Thanks Mike. It seems to start every time with throttle and the runs normal It hasn't died out on its own. If this is normal then I can live with it, however if it is not then I would like to fix it.

If it will only run with some throttle then it's not normal and will make maneuvering hard as needing to shift in and out of forward and reverse to dock.

Hi Mike it only needs a bit of throttle to start. Once it has started then it runs normal and idles nicely in neutral etc.
I have had the IAC checked and it is working fine.

I have had the fuel pump replaced and both batteries renewed. A mechanic has run a computer over it, IAC checked and still no idea.

Not sure what to think at this point.
How long have you owned the boat and when did this issue start?

I have had the boat for about 18 months and had it serviced as soon as I bought it. Not sure when the problem started it seemed fine the first month or so.
Also apologies if there is any time delay in responses as I am in Perth Western Australia.

We have a few members down under.
We all just respond as we can. Have you posted this on other forums such as iboats to see anyone there has an answer? However if no fault codes were read by the mechanic it would just be guess work and that can run up $'s

While I appreciate that, and never get tired of hearing it........I didn't say anything, other than that I moved the thread to a more appropriate sub-forum.

What year is the engine? This sounds exactly like a carb'd starting procedure.

Hi Mike,
I have joined iboats but I think I must be missing something I cannot for the life of me work out how to make a post on it. A bit frustrating.

Go to forum rules and guidelines and there is a post telling how to creat new topics.

1) Does it always require that you advance the throttle to start? Or is it only after the engine has been run for some time?
2) When you start the engine, do you advance the ignition to 'Aux' then wait for a minute or two? You should hear the fuel pump turn on and pressurize the system. Like an air-compressor, you'll hear it turn off when pressure is built up. Are you just hitting the key and trying to start, or are you waiting for the fuel system to pressurize first?
