Default GM/Mercruiser 3ltr

Hi Guys

Other than the big Red Button, is there any other 'cut outs' on the Mercrusier 3ltrs engine (Maxum 1800)

John

The big red button is the 50 amp engine breaker. Not sure if the 3.0 has the fuse on the starter solenoid like some other models do but if so it would remove all power. Poor connection of the 10 circular harness connection is another know issue.

It would be helpful to know what you problem is.

Hi John, limp mode is only something that a MPI engine ECM does. You issue wouldn’t have anything to do with prime power and is either an ignition issue like a bad coil or ignition sensor in the distributor but could also be a fuel issue.

How long does it take to happen and then recover?

Hi Mike,
We've had every ancillary item renewed, on the fuel side: Additional Fuel filter/water separator, new mechanical fuel pump, New carb., on the electrical: New battery leads, coil pack, distributor, HT lead and Spark plugs - after the 'limp home mode' we shut down for a while, and after a re-start she seems fine.
What is the situation with the safety ignition cut out, we've never tried it, is that a total engine cut out
Were at a loss to know whats happening

Hi John,

The safety kill switch will remove power to the ignition system. It’s a captain overboard safety feature where a lanyard clips on the switch and its other end is connected to the captain by either a wrist strap or belt clip. If the captain is knocked down or goes overboard by hitting a big wave the lanyard trips the switch to the open (kill) position shutting down the engine.

Since you replaced the coil I would suspect the ignition sensor in the distributor is causing your problem. These tend to fail as they heat up and recover after they cool down. Under Documents of this site you will find the Mercruiser manual for your engine which has a troubleshooting guide. It will also show you the sensor that I’m talking about.
