Engine starts but won't stay on "idle"?

Hello new to this site so bare with.

2002 Maxum 1900 SR, took it out on Friday and it worked fine, on Sunday took my son and 6 friends out for his bday, boat was having some trouble starting.

It eventually turned on but it would not stay on for long, I started to accelerate the engine and it would shut off, at times it would accelerate up to 30 RPM but would not stay on for long then it would just turn off.

Any ideas or suggestions? I owe 7 teenager a ride on the boat.
