Default Engine shutsdown

So a couple of questions from a newbie on boating.

First, when I choke the motor (which I need to be able to start) at start, I push Throttle Only Button to get it into neutral, however the throttle cannot be pushed forward unless I also push the gear button (neutral lock bar). Just wanted to verify its the right way so the trottle do not need a look through.

I have experienced a couple of times that the engine dies when I am about to dock and I push the throttle from "gear" to neutral (trottle in vertical position). Will it act different if I use vs not use the "gear" botton (neutral lock bar) when positioning it backwards (from forward gear it into neutral position)?

Also when engine is running I hear a random sound like a bird singing. I have not been able to locate the source. Really strange.
Any idea what that could be all about?

Yes to move the control lever lock must be held in, this is independent of the shift cable be engaged or not.

Are you saying that the engine stalls when shifting from either forward or reverse into neutral? Are you shifting slowly? I.e. do you hear a chatter? If so that is the dog clutch slipping and you are coming out of gear to slowly. If not the lower shift cable either needs adjustment or replacement. There is a shift interrupt switch that temporarily shorts the ignition to remove load on the clutch allowing for easy shifting.

That’s an unusual sound. Try removing the belt to see if it goes away.

Yes, it stalls when shifting from forward to neutral. Not sure about backwards to neutral. Yes I have been shifting it perhaps to slowly (will test more firmly next time).

Will the shift interupt switch short if I move the throttle to slow?

"Unusal sound" - sounds expensive haha

The shift interrupt switch operates when coming out of gear no matter how slow or fast you do it but if to slow the engine can’t recover and stalls.
