I prefer the gap tester as it can be set to the exact gap the plugs use. The light can flash even if the spark is to weak to jump the gap.

I read the instructions, the "gap" is for the voltage rating of the coil. Not necessarily to mimic the gap of your plug.

They are one and the same as the gap of the plug is based on the coils output voltage.

GREAT NEWS!! It worked. Went out on the Long Island Sound from Glen Cove to Brown's Marina in Stratford CT at 20knots with NO PROBLEMS!!! Thank you Mike for your help and insight.

Just to be clear what did you do? Replace the ignition sensor?

Yes, got the part from Amazon and replaced the sensor inside the distributor cap.
