Default Engine Rebuilds

Both engines will be pulled out because the inboard stringers need to be replaced.

I do not believe they have ever been rebuilt.

There's nothing particularly wrong with them and they passed inspection in July. One is losing a little coolant, around a quart for the season. It's not getting into the bilge or the oil.

They are carbed 7.4L with just under 700 hours.

Is there any value in taking advantage of the situation and having them rebuilt or should I wait until they actually need it?

How long do you plan to own the boat?

Good point.

Three to five years.

I would have a compression and leak down test performed, if no major issues it won’t be cost effective since you plan to sell in 5 or less years.

I agree with Mike and Phillbo's comments. When you say "rebuild" do you mean "take it apart and see if anything is wrong with it"? If so, then basic engine checks is all I recommend that you do.

It's like buying a boob job for a girlfriend that you don't plan to make your wife

And now I'm incentivized to spend the money on something else.

Thanks for the motorboat sound advice.

Your heat exchanger is going. The raw water side of the heat exchanger is significantly lower pressure than the closed cooling side. Over time, pin holes develop in the tubing, causing coolant to leak into the raw water side and get discharge with the raw water.

If one is going it, the other is close. Service or replace your heat exchangers.
