You can try removing the drive to see if the squeal stops, if so it’s either the drive or gimbal bearing if not its engine related. There is no issue runn8ng the engine for a few minutes without cooling.

I did continue to chase this issue for quite a while (changed the belt, changed the raw water pump, changed several pulleys, swapped out the alternator). Never solved it. In the end one mechanic diagnosed it as a noise from the throttle body that's an issue with the particular 496 MAG I had (I sold the boat a few months ago). Mine lacked the throttle body muffler (the small sponge) that was added in the later models to quiet the throttle body. Some people found that replacing the flame arrestor with a K&N filter solved the problem, but I never got around to trying that.

Default gimble, almost certain

For f sakes! I just put (new to me) fresh water transom assemblies on in December. When I trimmed the leg up a little last night the sound disappeared. Then, when trimmed down, steering alters to noise slightly.

Not sure what you mean by new to you, brand new or used units you bought? If the later all bets are off. If brand new I would have to question was engine alignment performed.

Default Those were perfect 👌

Dry as a bone, nice and rubbery still.
