Default Check your fuel pump

I had an engine shut down and wouldnt restart on my 3200 with twin 454's. After some checking I narrowed it down to the fuel pump. FYI...Mercruiser wants almost $200 for fuel pump. I was able to determine the manual fuel pump that mounts on the water pump is made by Airtex. Bought one on Amazon for $53 bucks ! Was an exact fit. Remember to check the oil for the fuel pump in this setup, it runs on a cam in the water pump. Mine was dry and the lever was wore down so far it wasn't pumping.

I have learned a few things here and wanted to pass on this info.

It's $200 because it's marinized. The one you got was $53 because it was not. These are GM engines and it is common to find the automotive version significantly cheaper. It is because it is made with different materials in most cases. Using automotive parts on a boat it a bad idea. They are not built to marine standards, they are not ignition protected and not made from non-corrosive components.

NO sir. I checked the Airtex part number. It is a marinized fuel pump. They make the pump sell it to mercruiser who paints it black and marks up the price. One place even confirmed the casting numbers the same. Airtex makes pumps for everything from boats to airplanes.

It is also easy to recognize an automotive fuel pump from a marine fuel pump because the marine fuel pump has the barb connection for the clear tube. A automotive fuel pump will not have that connection.

The marine pump has 2 diaphragms for saftey. The barb for the clear tube is between them. If gas is visible in the tube it means that the gas side diaphragm has failed an it's time for a new pump.

Sounds like a marine pump to me.

Absolutely , The Airtex number is 60932. It is for the big block 454 with bravo drive. The bravo drive will have the water pump mounted on the side of the motor with the fuel pump mounted on top of the water pump.
