Default carberator choke question

1998 maxum 2800 scr
7.4 mercruiser, bravo 3

This past week I noticed a lot of black smoke coming out the exhaust. I did some research and found that it is often due to a rich carburetor.
I adjusted the mixture screws and all seems fine for that day but next time out the black smoke was back again.
While the engine was running and warmed up I opened up the carb cover and found the choke in a 3/4" closed position. I opened it to fully open position by hand and the idle increased quiet a bit.
My thought was to warm the engine and then loose the 3 screws that hold the choke spring cover on. Then I could slowly turn the choke housing until the choke is fully open.
I can't find and info on how to adjust this online.
any thoughts would be appreciated.
thanks!
Mark

Mark you have the correct proceedure. Typically it is set when cold and adjusting it so it is open about a pencil width. Then need to verify it full open when warmed up.
