Default Alternator voltage flucuation, 1997 4.3 Merc

When running the volt meter is at 12 volts, at idle it is 13 volts and sometimes bounces between 12 and 13. How do I trouble shoot this?

sounds like the voltage regulator is taking a dump on you..take the alt. off and to a local auto parts store..they can test it really easily...and for free.

I'm hoping this is because the battery is charged well. Every since I added the house battery the starboard battery only has to start the engine. The engine turns over very easy. Can I check with a meter at the alternator.

Hi - Any word on this? Im experiencing something similar... voltage bounces from 14v to 12v periodically. Particularly noticable when a bassy song is on the radio, but occurs with the radio off as well.

also check that you have 8volt feed to the alternator to control the voltage regulator. Should come on and off with ignition swt.
