Default 97 1900 sr need help!

Hello all, I just purchased a 97 1900 SR from a longtime friend. With a bit of a catch, boat has this weird issue that we can't quite figure out. It has the 5.0 Metcruiser and has been very well kept. Back in 2018 he had the boat out and it shut off and would not re fire. After about 15 minutes it re fired and they were able to limp back to the marina. Its been in his garage since about a month ago when I picked it up from him. Took it out on the lake, ran it for 30 minutes, no issues. Back to the lake today, ran it for about 30 minutes parked at a friends dock for maybe 20 and then were heading back to the boat landing and an audible alarm sounded, something flashed on a small LCD screen on the dash ( I have no clue what this screen is ) the beeping stopped and about 30 seconds later the boat shut off. Almost like it was out of fuel. As far as I know the gauge works. Tried to restart it and it would just turn over.....like it was out of fuel. After about the fourth try to restart it, it re fired. Ran fine back to the landing. I have no clue where to start other than maybe a fuel filter. This is my first try at being a boat owner, hope someone can get me in the right direction. Thanks!

Small LCD screen is probably depth indicator and likely just a coincidence if you were approaching ramp. Engine problem maybe water separator or fuel pump issue, or possibly ignition breaking down with temp. Go slow and one step at a time, don't over think the problem. Not much help here just my two cents 😉

Can you post a picture of this gauge? Like said I don’t think what you saw on the gauge is related to the issue. My first thought based on the fault when your friend owned the boat was the ignition sensor in the distributor however the later descriptions makes me think the fuel tank vent may be clogged with a bug nest or the fuel pickup is getting clogged with debris in the tank which self clears once the engine stalls. Is this a carburetor engine? Was the alarm a buzzer noise or something else?

I hate to sound stupid, but I’m honestly not quite sure if this boat is fuel injected or carbureted. I’ve attached a picture of the engine and the dash, which shows the small lcd screen that I heard a beeping noise from and some numbers flashed up but then shortly it stopped and the screen went blank.

Ok that’s a carburetor engine. The display is the depthfinder, the beeping may have been the depth alarm. I still recommend checking the things i mentioned in my other post.

Thank you, again newbie here, but where would the fuel tank vent be located? I’m assuming downstream from the filler location? And should I mess with the fuel filter? I forgot to mention I had the boat running for quite some time in my driveway and the problem never arose, maybe because there was no load on it? And I should probably mention that the gas in it currently is the same gas as was in it in 2018 when the problem first arose. The boat ran perfect yesterday for probably a solid 45 minutes.

The vent is on the side of the hull, little chrome thing. When it happens again try removing the fill cap. If you hear a rush of air the vent is clogged. That old fuel may be the problem. How much is left?

I’d say there may be five gallons left in there.

That’s about a quarter thank, I would pump it out and fill with fresh fuel.
