Default 6BTA Rebuild/Overhaul

I have a 1998 Maxum SCB with two Cummins 6BTA 5.9 370hp diesels. The #6 cylinder on the port engine swallowed a valve. Having the head pulled to assess any further damage. Has anyone had to experience a rebuild/overhaul? If so, can you share estimated or actual cost of the rebuild? The engines only have 1370 hrs on them, but they are original hours. The boat sat docked most of the time with the previous owner, which we know is not good for marine diesels.

I hate to steer traffic away from the site, however there are simply very, very few diesel owners on this site.

Our sister site "TrawlerForum.com" is where I typically go for diesel advise. I'm a moderator on that forum as well.

While I don't do this often, I would suggest that you look over at 'boatdiesel.com'. It's an older model forum with a pay wall. However, once inside it is a wealth of information on marine diesels.

Try logging onto and posting on www.trawlerforum.com

I've rebuilt both my 5.9s at 2000 hr - they also had sat with not much use for years. In So California my cost, all in, was $20-23K each.

If you haven't found it already, I suggest you venture over to Seaboard Marine. They have a fantastic community forum that can answer all your Cummins questions. I've been using their advice for almost six years. They can also supply you with parts.
