are you talking about the clunk or chunk when it goes into gear??..that's normal....if it grinds and sounds like sand grinding away...that's not good...you see...there is no clutch for you to engage the fwd/reverse gear...so there is an engine cut out which momentarily cuts the engine while you shift..the clunk is the gear synching and slipping into gear....to be sure your not doing any damage...you can pull the oil plug at the bottom of the drive and check some of the oil for any metal shavings.....

it could mean alot of things but first thing that comes to mind is the bull gears are gone.....take the boat out of the water.....look at the top of your drive unit...there is a cap with 4 silver star bolts on top....remove those and gently pry that square cap off.....that exposes the bull gear.....look at the gear and see if there's any metal parts or filings floating around....be careful not to loose or damage that oring gasket....

if you see filings...your drive is in need of repair...

oh...and welcome to the zoo...
