Not sure how vessel view works so I would call mercruiser and tell them what you are seeing as it seems like it’s saying no readings from a starboard engine

Are you going to purchase this boat, or did you purchase it?

If you are going to purchase it, why is this your problem?

If you purchased it, why did you do so with such issues?

I purchased the boat at a discount after doing the compression check. The rest of the boat is in great shape. Once I figure out the engine issue, repaint the drive, and fix the bellows it should be an excellent boat.

This boat pretty much checked all the boxes for me. I wanted a windlass, radar arch, generator, air condition, and wanted to test out the slip world.

My last boat was always trailered and was missing all if those items. It was a 24ft cruiser.

I'm going to have it oulled out if the water soon so that I can paint the drive and replace the bellows, shift cable, trim senders, and gimbal bearing so the engine will be the last big issue.

I purchased vessel view mobile, but it doesnt give a ton of messages. I'm close to purchasing the Diacom software.

I've only replaced the spark plugs, rotor and cap, and checked the fuel pickup/ball check valve. Funny thing is when I replaced the cap and rotor it start tobeep and lose RPMs at times. Wasn't doing that before. Maybe I have a bad spark plug wire. I have a new Mercury set on the way.

I need to test the TPS and crank sensor too, but haven't had a chance yet.

New mercury plug wires installed today. No alarms and no cutouts or drops in RPMs.

It still doesn't run like it should though. In the screenshot, you can see my RPMs and top speed. Not good.

The prop is a 20P and Mercury seems to show that it should be closer to a 22P. I wonder how this would change things.

Increasing pitch will result in lower rpm and top speed. You need to decrease pitch. Don’t recall what drive you have.

What wS the result of the compression test and did you perform a leak down test as well?

Sorry for not getting back to you Mike. The engine shows good compression and each cylinder within range of each other. I was lazy and didn't perform the leak down test. I purchased the test kit, but haven't used it yet.

I will have much more info on this thread in the near future. I just dropped a much of money on the Diacom Marine software. It should arrive in the next few days.

I just got done fixing a leak in the bellows. I pulled the drive, repaired some corrosion, and painted it. I replaced the ujoint and shift cable bellows, the shift cable, gimbal bearing, and the trim senders. I also had the props repaired and polished.

I'll post some diacom info in the next few days.

I wasn't able to do a lot of testing at lunch today, but here is some initial info. This was all gathered at idle in the slip so no actual in use testing yet. I won't be able to get that done till next week. Let me know if you see anything glaring. I think all or most of the faults are sensors not connected. What do you think?

I think this is what the ECM has stored in it:

It's funny because I met and spoke to a guy in a slip near mine and he said he had the same engine, same problem. He ended up pulling all everything off and carbing it. He said it runs great now. I hope that I don't get to that point.

The only thing that stands out to me is the timing advance which for old school (carb) would have a base timing of 8*. Yours is showing -0.75*.

Would be interested to see if it increases with higher rpm.

Here is a video from today. I don't see anything out of the norm. My drive fluid reservoir puked a bunch of fluid into my bilge this evening. Not sure why other than slightly over filled.

Anyway, here is the video. You may need to pause during the video to see the numbers change. I was by myself this evening so I was able to get the boat on plane, but only to about 27 MPHs. I've read others are more in the 38-40 range. I can't get on play with a couple of passengers.

Based on max rpm I’m assuming the boat got on plane with just you. It would be interesting to repeat this test but with passengers on board and not being able to plane.

Agreed.. Base timing is off and at full throttle is only 24 degrees.
Newer vortec heads like 28 degrees (older ran the more traditional 32 degrees total advance).

Set the base timing according to instructions and retest.

I don't think you can set timing on this motor, but I'll see if I can find out what timing should be at WOT for this motor.

Advance is fixed by the control module. Base timing is still set by rotating the distributor.
Review the instructions in the manual for setting the ignition module into Service or Base Timing mode.

That would concern me....

How good of a deal did the seller let you have on this boat?

Which part concerns you, something in the video? The timing? About 9k off the next lowest similarly equipped fresh water boat.

I went to due a misfire test this evening, but my computer was having an issue and I only got through 2 cylinders. Both appear to be contributing fine.

Your boat appears to have many issues..Sometimes a deal is not such a deal in the long run.

Why is your drive puking fluid?

Ahh, okay. I just got done painting the drive and doing a complete bellows job. I'm guessing it had some air in the line. I didn't do a good job of keeping the reservoir full.

I felt like I got a good enough deal that if I have to rebuild the engine over the winter I'm fine with that. I love to try and fix things. I'm actually bidding on a 79 Carlson right now that needs some work. I have no idea how to fix it, but that's the fun part.

Don't get me wrong, I thought I would have figured out my engine issue by now, but I've had some things come up that have kept me away from it. I'll be able to do every test in my Diacom software this weekend and report back.

I was just hoping someone would see something in the video that I'm not seeing. I'm not sure about the timing and the MAP readings.
