Default 2000 Mercruiser V8 5.7L starting problems

Engine was starting and running well but will not now start. Engine fires on the key but then dies and will not run. Have changed the coil, HT leads, points, plugs, dismantled the carburettor, replaced jet and gaskets. Full tank of new petrol, plugs sparking, fuel pump pumping fuel, batteries fully charged, all electrical connections checked.
Any ideas please as to what the problem could be?

Most likely the oil pressure switch that powers the electric fuel pump is bad. When starting the pump gets power from the starter solenoid and once the engine is running the oil pressure switch closes and provides power to the pump. This is a safety item to shut the fuel pump off if the engine dies.
