Default 1988 Johnson 150 starter problems

I purchased a 1988, 150 HP Johnson outboard. Each time it tries to fire on a cylinder the starter kicks out. It takes many tries to start the engine. So I replaced the starter with a new one from my local boat shop (over $200.00)and the new one does the same thins. If the starer would stay in gauged a little longer it would start on. again One cylinder fires and it kicks the starter out.I have never witnessed this before.
(The flywheel looks good, teeth all look good and not wore). so would it be the new starter? Does anyone know why this is doing this?
Thanks
Mr Steve

This problem has absolutely nothing to do with the starter!

Timing, I am not a mechanic but have worked on a lot of cars. I am learning about this boat and I thank you for your suggestion. Timing that is interesting. Thank You I will try and learn how to do that on this engine.

Also I am having trouble finding a good manual for this engine. Anyone know where I could obtain one? The ones I have previewed does not cover my older engine it is:
1988 Johnson GT150 VRO V6
Model 1150STLCEN

would you know by any chance the timing settings?
Example: 4 deg before top dead center, or top dead center? etc.
I do not have a repair manual for the engine. That I am still looking for.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by 'kicks the starter out'?

if you ever started a car with a bad starter bindex on the starter it will turn over a little then kick out and stop turning the flywheel. Well this new starter on my boat is doing the same thing. As soon as one Cylinder fires the bendex on the starter kicks out, it take many cranks on the starter to get the motor started. On a car it is a wore out bendix or bad flywheel. On my boat the flywheel teeth all look good and this is a brand new starter.
My local boat shop where I purchased the starter says it is not the new starter, but could offer up anything else for me to look for.
As soon as the motor tries to start, the bendix on the starter kicks out ( not making contact with flywheel.
