Default What type of battery?

Hello,

I have a battery question...I know that there has been much dialogue about battery wiring/hookup and use of selector switches, but not much about ideal battery type. I have a 1989 Maxum 2300 cuddy and have determined that i need new batteries this year. (I use two batteries with the perko selector).

As i see it, there are three types of battery that could be used in this boat: Standard automotive cranking batteries, marine dual purpose batteries, and marine deep cycle batteries. I should mention that I dont have many electrical loads beyond VHF, gps, and cd player...no baitwell or appliances.

Any suggestions on which batteries to buy? Common wisdom suggests two new "dual purpose" but they are more expensive than automotive batteries and i wonder if they are necessary for this application.

Thanks!

are you near a costco???..go there and get 2 deep cycle group 24 batt's....they cost less than a 100 bucks each and have a pretty good warranty...they will serve all of your needs with those 2 batt.s....yeah..it might be overkill but hey...would you rather have extra batt. juice when things go bad or have just barely enough??....

Our new boat came with two Deep cycle batteries. Our last boat had two dual purpose batteries and we got ten years out of them with no problems.
