Default Vhf calling

OK, I know this sounds dumb to some out there but the last boat I had that had a vhf on it we were required to have a license from FCC.
Now that we no longer need a license with a call sign what do we use for a call sign?
And how do we sign on and off to calls?
Thank for any and all help.
Just call me Dumb Don.

On the VHF you sign on and off using the boats name. I don’t think there is a rule on this so if you don’t have a name on your boat you can use the registration number.

This is what we teach in class.....use your boat name or use the phrase of pleasure boat. I use the first to talk to other boaters and the second to contact bridges, locks, gas docks etc.

However, if you plan to leave your territorial waters (eg. cross into Canadian waters), then you do need a licence and full registration. Same applies up here, if we cross into USA waters, we must be fully licenced.
Here's the link to our regulations on VHF - https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/marinesafet...qs-1489.htm#01
