Default iPad Navigation Apps

Does anyone use an iPad for maps/navigation? I'm considering buying the iNavX Marine app in particular as a secondary navigation source.

How do you "connect"? My wifi connection is spotty and undependable when offshore. I've seen some advertisements that mention needing a GPS connection for the iPad but I don't see that option in my iPads settings.

Im lucky with a SIM card Ipad I can get coverage when offshore, however we dont normally go more than about 20 miles out, dont know what you would do to improve but I have an Iphone as well and have a mobile booster kit for it installed in the boat, so when the ipad starts to drop out of mobile coverage I use the iphone and set it to "personal hotspot wifi" and allow the ipad to piggy back for the internet

Check out "bad-elf.com"... They sell a mini square GPS adapter for iPads, (I think around 100 bucks) about the size of a quarter which plugs into the large 30 pin ipad charging port. I first read about it in Boating Magazine then checked out the site. I haven't purchased yet but I'm probably going to try it out. From what I understand, It should allow you to connect underway without wifi or 3G/4G service. If you get it, pls let us know what you think (& I'll do the same)... Best of luck & hope this helps...

Haven't tried any of these yet but was surprised to find my cell phone has a really good locater app. Not good for navigation at all but showed me where I was and gave a decent map. I was only about 5 miles out though.
