Default Gas Gauge

I had to replace my gas gauge in my boat, the other ones mount broke. I believe the old one was working before I replaced it, but I cannot find it now to test it. The new one pops up to 3/4 tank as soon as I switch the ignition on and stays there, though it does drop without power, so it is not stuck. The gas gauge had the same hookup on it as the old one as far as the three prong connect and the one slide connect, so I assumed it would work the same, but maybe there are different voltages sent? Is there anything else I should check, I was thinking that maybe the float is stuck or something, but I am not sure how to access that to check.
