Does Refrigerator only work on Shore Power - Maxum Boat Owners Club

I just recently bought a 1995 2400SCR and I am trying to figure out if the refrigerator only works with Shore Power. I can't seem to understand why it isn't coming on. I've checked the fuse and everything but still no luck. Any suggestions?

Should be dual volt and run on 12V as well. Is the switch inside of the frig on?

Ok had to ask.

When you checked the fuse did you verify 12V is on both sides? The fuse blocks used are not that good and over time poor connections happen.

Next would be to pull the frig to see if 12V is getting to it.

I will do that now. I am working on a few other things and hopefully that will fix it. Multiple people tell me that the fridge is going to drain my battery if I leave it running while on the water for 7-8 hours until I return to shore. Is that correct?

Probably so, look to find it's rated watts per hour and divide that number by 12 to get the current. Then multiple that by the number of hours you will use it to get how much the battery will discharge.

Example

120 watts per hour / 12 = 10 amps
10 X 8 = 80 amps discharged.
Your battery may be 550 CCA so it will be down to 470 CCA.

Older battery's never reach full recharge.

Manual for my boat recommends turning the fridge thermostat down to 2 or less to conserve power.

We leave the dock on Friday evening and anchor out until Sunday afternoon. The fridge is running the entire time. We turn the fridge down to 3 when we're away from the dock. that slows the melt in the freezer significantly and keeps everything in the fridge cool.

We have 2 x Group 31 AGM batteries for the house. We also use a Honda 2000 for a couple hours a day if we're out more than 2 nights.

Also remember that the amperage draw is only when the fridge is running and it doesn't run 24 hours/ day. it cycles on and off. Make sure it's turned all the way up when you are at the dock. Turn it down when you disconnect. Reduce how frequently it's opened (don't store drinks in it, use a cooler instead). Make sure the coils on the back are clean. You'll get more from your fridge than you think.

As for the 12v vs 110v. I assume the battery switch is turned on and the switch inside the fridge is turning on. There should be a light inside the fridge. Is that coming on when the switch is turned on?

Turn the fridge down to 2 while it's on shore power and wait a few hours for it to cool down. Then shut of the shorepower breaker. Now make sure the internal switch is on and crank the temp to max. Does the fridge cycle on? Is it just that the thermostat is down to temp. Fridges don't actually run constantly. They really only run less than 50% of the time. I think 30 - 40% is probably more accurate.

I have a little info for you. I have a 94' 2400scr. My fridge would only run on shorepower until I finally fix it. The green LED that comes on inside the fridge on the thermostat was faulty. It still lit up and looked to be working, but was not allowing voltage to pas through. I simply removed it and soldered a new one in place and the 12v side started working. Somehow, when they designed this fridge, the thermostat main board power runs through the LED...So when its faulty, 12V side no longer works.

Posting this incase someone else is looking for info!

Well said Shrew.I think the main problem with these fridges when off shore power is "crew" constantly opening the thing in search of stuff. I am always being told the thing is never cold enough and you know damn well why. I do run the generator for at least two hours a day and keep a small voltmeter in the cigarette lighter to give me an indication of volts. I also leave the start battery switch off.
