Default 95 maxum 2000sr gas gauge concerns

just bought the boat and had on the water once for three hours. I got 10 gallons prior to the trip and the gauge never moved. It reads almost full with the ignition on. It did not move when filling. After three hours of light cruising (getting to know the boat), the gauge never moved. The gauge goes beyond empty when power goes off and just under full when powered up by the key ignition. It was said to have worked but fear makes me question it. Any tips on confirming the gauge , wiring and sending unit is working ?

Disconnect the sender wire and the gauge should read empty, then ground the wire and the gauge should read full. If the gauge passes this test replace the sender.

Ok awesome. It might be working just I didn’t run enough.. is there a sequence like this for testing sending unit operation?
Some said just pull it and action the float. Seems like a good one but pulling mayor may not be easy/good for the unit

Before removing the fuel sender make sure the tank is about 1/2 full and the boat is level. Yes you can move the sender arm to see if the gauge needle moves but this is not very accurate.

Let’s say the gauge read like a 1” tape measure. Empty or zero with the key off. 7/8 when the key is on so not quite full but idk it’s always been that way ( all 7 days I’ve owned the boat). Removed the green wire no change. Full yes but didn’t move from 7/8. Reconnected green and disconnected pink, empty. Quite possible everything is fine or could be a sending unit. Does that sound accurate ?

Are you removing the pink wire from the gauge or sender? I would remove it from the sender. With it off it should read empty then touch the pink wire to the green wire and it should read full. If it does both of these the gauge is ok.

I removed the wires from the sender. In both cases wether removing the green or the pink, I just removed the wire one at a time from its connection , checked the gauge and reinstalled at its connection. I did not put the pink on the green. I can try that tough.

The pink is the sense wire for the gauge and that’s the one to focus on.

Thank you! Pink to green wire test this moring spiked the gauge to full and vice versa. Is it possible the float is stuck and I could pull the sender for an adjustment (smack it lol) temporarily until I get another? Idk if the sender has a gasket that will be ruined if I removed to check it out..,.. wanted to go out for Father’s Day today. Guess I’ll be taking some fuel with me.

There is a gasket. No smacking will fix it, just replace it. There is a reed style which isn’t as susceptible to fuel sloshing in the tank.
