engine stops when tank still half full

I have an 1800Sr 4.2 liter mercruser - I was showing half a tank of gas when the engine cut out - I thought perhaps a faulty guage or sender, and in fact I had ran out of fuel, however when I was towed back by the rescue boat and refueled, it only took 15 gallons (of a 30 gallon tank) which confirms gauge accuracy - and its is now working perfectly - im worried that it will cut out when it gets to half full again - does anyone know what this could be?
