Default New Owner of 3300SCR Looking for a walkthrough

I'm the proud new owner of a 2005 3300SCR, needs a but of work but once done will be a beautiful boat.

The handover from the previous owner has been less than stellar, I'd really love to find someone who owns the same/similar who can walk me through the boat and any tips/hints they have.

I'm in Australia, so not as common a boat here.

If anyone is willing to answer a few questions, it would be much appreciated!

Welcome aboard!

I’m sure if you post your questions here folks will provide answers. Have you owned a boat before?

Happy to!

This is the largest boat I have ever had, and certainly the first with two inboard engines. It will definitely be a learning experience.

Some questions:

- There are some unlabeled switches, I'd love a run down of what the various switches do on board, but I will take some photos when next on board.
- Are there any hints/tips/procedures etc? If someone was to say "I always do X before I do Y on my boat" for example.
- Wondering how the Sealand Vacuflush toilet works? It seems to regularly pump/activate something in the engine bay? There is a regular noise.
- Does anyone have a good tip for where to store a fire extinguisher?

And any other general advice I guess

Thanks!

Here is a link to your boats manual. There should be a diagram of the helm switchs. You will also find the engine and drive manuals under Documents.

Fire extinguishers should be mounted in accessible locations. One neat the galley, another near the helm. I prefer an automatic extinguisher in the engine compartment.

Tips: Always operate the blower for 4 minutes prior to starting the engines or generator. Being a new to you boat if you don’t know the age of the drive bellows and exhaust components I would inspect/replace them. I’ve never owned a Vacaflush but if you are hearing the pump cycle while not using the head that would be the sign of a leak in the system.

Many thanks! The manual is very useful. It doesn't have information on the switches unless I'm missing something?

The manifolds and risers are being done next week, and then she is coming out of the water the following week and at the very least will be getting a bellows kit and anodes. I'll be having the mechanic go through the sterndrives with a fine tooth comb though to see if anything else is needed.

Disappointing if there is a leak in the head system, the survey I had done before purchase marked the system as operational. I'll have a look. I guess I flush and monitor the system in the engine bay for a leak?

You’re right the manual doesn’t have a helm diagram like in many others. I guess you can try each switch to see what it does, try looking on yachtworld for another 3300 for sale to see if there is a picture or a member with this model may chime in. I’m not familiar enough with a vacflush to help.

I would also get the lower shift cables replaced while doing the bellows. You may also consider replacing the trim limit and trim position sensors. More importantly check that the swivel shafts don’t need replacing.

Seems its a known issue with the Vacflush, I'm down the google rabbit hole on it now and will try to diagnose and fix myself.

I'll definitely get the cables and sensors looked at too. The drive cables were marked as "fair for age" in the report.

By swivel shaft do you mean the steering pin (known issue on the Bravo 3 drives)? They are corroding, so they need doing at some point, my mechanic says not imminently, but when she is out I will get them cleaned up and have a good look with the mechanic.

What we do will depend on the condition of the other components of the sterndrives. If everything other than the steering pin is in good shape, then I will get the transom assemblies done sooner rather than later. If other parts of the sterndrives are toast, it might start making more sense to talk about new drives...

I believe swivel shaft is Mercruisers term for the steering pin. They can become a problem on Alpha and all Bravo transom assemblies. Signs of wear are leaking seal at the shaft, play in steering typically slop between shaft and gimbal ring. I have seen ignoring it result in failure where the gimbal ring seperates from the shaft which means the drive is hanging by a thread. In other words not something to put off to long.

Fully understand, the whole system will have a thorough going over in a couple of weeks with minimal use until then. Right now there is no water leaking and steering is good. If the rest of the drive system is in good shape, then new assemblies it is.

It should be under the helm, look for an access panel.

If you have questions or problems, open a new thread for each question or problem.

It starts to get muddy when 3 people are discussing head problems interleaved with other people discussing a manifold and riser issue all in the same thread.

We have sub-forums for specific topics:

Maxum Owners General Discussions: General boating discussions

Electronics: Navigation, communication and other electronics

Engines:
Discuss engines; operations, maintenance, repair and replacement.

Maxum Maintenance: Seasonal and occasional maintenance discussions.

Projects and Customisations

etc....
