Default 2400 seats - wood rot replacement minimally invasive

There are two folding seats in the 2400 cockpit. Mine have been dropping black rotten wood chips all last year along the front and back edge of both. The two thirds port and one-third starboard halves.

I unbolted them and brought them home the other day to attempt a fix. I didn't want to blow up the entire thing to replace the wood trim along the front or back edge upon which the upholstery is stapled. The base board is a grey plastic that has stood up great. Too bad they didn't use that to staple the upholstery into along the front or back since it lasted very well.

Here's some pictures of what i did in the process.

first, here you see a back edge on one of the seats. I've pulled the staples along that edge and have the garbage pulling out. Notice the big wood screws sticking out from the other side of the base.

I decided to sandwich two treated 1x2 pieces together around those screws. The board was $3 at Home Depot. I cut the half that goes on the outside in half as it is a lot easier to get it behind the screws that way.

putting one half in first:

Once i had the two back halves in, i marked where to drill two holes on each between the screws. Then with a brass screws i bolted the halves together.

Stapled the vinyl to fresh wood:

finished one side of one seat:

It was pretty nasty under the seats. But they unbolted and were removed very easily. I cleaned up in there, and I'm going to re-grease the tracks before I bolt it back in. The new wood is firm and strong on the old base screws. Pretty happy with the result and level of effort.

Hope this was interesting to someone.

I haven’t noticed any rot on mine yet but there original was a black backing on them that crumbled and fell off over a few years.

I hope you used stainless steel staples. Normal staples will eventually start weeping rust stains.

Oh, good question. I bought the staple gun and Arrow JT21 staples. It doesn't say anything about the material on the staple package.

But I googled "do arrow jt21 staples rust" and got this:
Arrow JT21 staples are designed to be used in high-moisture environments and are made of durable monel rustproof steel345. Monel is an alloy composed of nickel and copper, which makes it resistant to rust and corrosion12.
Hope that's accurate.

Monel is the correct staple to use for this application.
